'SHE'LL BE COMPANY FOR YOU' 1972
    THE COMING OF THE CAT
I stand by your grave to say goodbye -
Why is it that I cannot cry?
For years I nursed you as best I could,
Doing more than many husbands would:
But now you're gone and I'm alone,
Free at last from your bedside bell's tone.
Now Barbara's given me a cat
"She'll be company for you" - well, I don't know about that.
An animal in the house I do not need;
I don't want another mouth to feed.
I've got no time for cats and so
This little kitty will have to go.
It's night-time now - what's that I hear?
The sound of Margaret's bell rings clear!
But when once more I climb the stair
In her bedroom there is nothing there!
Now downstairs I can hear the growl
Of a big cat on the prowl.
This constant ringing in my brain
Is almost driving me insane!
Margaret! What more do you want of me?
Please, give me peace! Please, let me be!
The cat's getting bigger as it prowls around -
I see its pawprints on the ground!
It's after me, it wants me dead!
Ah! The bell, ringing, ringing in my head!
From beyond the grave I feel Margaret's touch.
So that's what you want! Please don't make it hurt too much!
I go now to her bedroom and lie down flat
To patiently await the coming of the cat.
