THE GIFT
Two men appeared, both dressed in blue;
One looked human, the other's skin had a greenish hue;
Both were frozen, their hair rimed with frost -
It was quite obvious that they both were lost.
I gave them sanctuary in my warm cave;
The human was ill, so food and water I gave.
I offered the alien some of my meat,
But he was wary and reluctant to eat.
I don't know whether I was right or wrong -
It must have been because I'd been alone so long;
Was it his beautiful ears, his gentle eyes, his deep, brown voice
That made my lonely heart sing and my solitary soul rejoice?
Why did he draw back before he kissed me?
Was he afraid, or ashamed the other might see?
Then, all inhibitions gone, he held me in an embrace;
I saw his radiant smile and such love on his face.
I felt no fear as he lifted me to my bed,
I felt wonder and joy, not loathing and dread.
I had never known the love of a gentle man,
And now in my empty future, I never again can;
But we gave one another the greatest gift of all,
Answering a primitive and age-old call.
Now they are gone, and dead to him I must be,
But the gift that he left is alive within me.
